Owl River School

The Owl River School of Life, established in September 2014, is led by Founder and Curriculum Director, Kiya Rae. She is accompanied by Secret Intelligence and Activity Director, Keenan Drake, and Sidekicks with Incredible Responsibility, Rob & Steph. With our mission to meet learning in every moment with freedom, fun, patience, and enthusiasm, we make a school wherever we go without ever spending time in a classroom.

“Leaders are not what many people think – people with huge crowds following them. Leaders are people who go their own way without caring, or even looking, to see if anyone is following them. “Leadership qualities” are not the qualities that enable people to attract followers, but those that enable them to do without them. They include, at the very least, courage, endurance, patience, humor, flexibility, resourcefulness, determination, a keen sense of reality, and the ability to keep a cool and clear head even when things are going badly… True leaders make us think, “If they can do that, then by golly I can too.” They do not make people into followers, but into new leaders.” ~ John Holt Teach Your Own: The John Holt Book of Homeschooling

Here’s a little test of the natural learning idea.

  • Get your ten favorite people in one room.
  • Choose a “subject” (you know, the school term)
  • Have each person show, tell, write their understanding of the  “subject”.
  • Have each person show, tell, write their feelings about the  “subject”.
  • Have each person show, tell, write their interest in the  “subject”.

If you get through the entire process and no one has changed the subject because they have no interest, knowledge or feelings about it… all your friends are exactly like you. They learn, grow, express, and feel exactly like you do. Hmm. If you & your friends are all statistics experts, please let know what the odds are of this happening. More likely, you will see how differently we all learn, grow, express and feel about most things in life. Why not support that instead of resist it?
